What does this novel (Angela's Ashes) tell us about hope and survival? OR how does Frank McCourt's writing connect to the following quote by Thomas Jefferson?
“I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. “

The novel tells us that even through the rough times if we push through it (survive) that there will be hope and a better future "at the end of the tunnel"
This novel shows that there's more importance towards surviving than towards hope but hope is also very important. It also shows that without hope its harder to survive but when you have hope it gives you something to survive for. K.T. Period 2
Angela's ashes teaches us about how and survival because every time a child does, there's still always that hope in the back of their minds that they're all going to be okay. Even as malachy sr, spend all their money on booze, angela and frank still hope that one day he's going to stop neglecting them and bring home the money for food and they will be able to survive off what frank brings home and what they find off the streets and in for banks.
The novel teaches me that surviving is harder if you have nothing to live for. Hope is what keeps us going and having a negative attitude towards the situation you're in doesn't help you get out of it. The best we can do is hope for the best to move forward. M.T Period 3
I think that Frank McCourts book relates to Thomas's quote because Frank has such a terrible history of his childhood, it must bring him to tears or something when he thinks of it. Frank's " dreams of the future" must have kept his hope strong for better days, and what not. Frank's future probably turned out way better than his history because he had written a published book and he got some awards for it.
Hope is the only thing people have in there life to survive for and without hope it would be like you aren't even living. Hope is life and life is survival. (period one)
As I read the novel, although I didn't read much yet, I notice how it focusses on surviving itself more than hope being the way to do it, although the family have gone through many things that brings sorrow and pain , they were still together, and that didn't prevent them from enjoying little things, like gathering around the small fire in their house to simply drink a cup of tea. I look forward to see how frank as a child in this story would view hope as the way to survive.
As we see so far in the novel Frank and his family are moving from one place to the other to survive. I think that hoe appears as the family prays a lot, their beliefs gives them a faith which some kind of hope. this faith give them a reason to move on in life.
This novel entitled, "Angela's Ashes" focuses more on poverty. Poorness of a family. As I read this novel, it shows that hope in this family still occurs despite of what trials and hardships they have been through. I think that for them, having hope means surviving. I think this family was still trying to see the bright side, looking and waiting for better things to happen as they go on with their lives.
This novel shows us that hope is what's helping this family survive. The novel shares a lot about how important it is to survive but it is also important to hope. This family continues to hope for a better life and that is how they are surviving.
The novel tells us that hope and survival are both key roles in the novel. It seems like Frank knows that too much hope can cause little survival, so he equals them out. The quote does relate to the novel. It is as if every one, young or old in his family has great dreams in the future whether it's good food or a big home. What ever there dreams are it's better than what they are experiencing now.
The novel shows us more about the poverty, that the poorness family lived in New York, Frank's father didn't work well and drunk. But they still having hope for there life, (after there back to Ireland) that's really important for there to survival with hope. So the story tells us that without hope is hard to survival, the most powerful of hope would make people's life survival. Period 2
“I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. “
This quote connects to the book Angela's Ashes in different ways. The family in the book inst very wealthy, so times aren't very easy. Instead of dreading on the past that might not be very good, they dream of that the future can be, Hoping that tomorrow will be better than today, And that one day they wont be in the situation that they're in right now. SF
This novel tells us that hope is pretty much the only thing keeping this family going. They are in the hardest position and all they can do is survive and hope that things will get better and that they will eventually have a good life and stop living in poverty
Frank McCourt's writing connects to this quote because in the book Angela's Ashes they arent very well off and have started there life in ruff patch. The kids dream of having a better day and hope that the future will be bright for them all, even for there parents. If they think about the past there will be death and sad days. N.C
Without hope you can't survive. When you're in poverty you hope to survive. In the book so far has shown us that hope is the only thing helping his family survive.
it tells us that everyone should be well off and should have food on the table and not having your mother or father going out spend the pay cheques and leaving the kids with nothing to eat LR
The novel shows that us that hope is very important to survival and even through the toughest times you can make it through if you have hope as it will drive you to survive. MB
Angela's ashes teaches us that hope is key for their family. They've been struggling with money and the deaths of their children and the only thing keeping them strong and together is hope. Even though Malachy goes out and spends their money on his addiction of drinking, they strive to get through the rough times. Hope is the only thing keeping their family together and alive.
In this novel, its all about hope and survival. Trying to survive in this time of the 30's, 40's was hard because this was when poverty was really big. Angela hopes to have a wonderful life, where everyone's perfect. She hope the dad comes home with the dole money and not spend it on drinking. she hopes that her kids will live good lives and not die from malnutrition. That when survival comes in. In the book, she loses 4 out of the 6 kids that she has. shes holding on the a thread of hope. hoping, no one else dies or that they will be safe from the diseases in Ireland Period 2. DM
Frank McCourt's writing connect to the quote “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. Frank only dreams of future like getting a job to support his family so they can eat and have proper clothing. Within the memoir he rarely notes about his thoughts of the past only mentioning how his mother wallows in the past memories of her deceased children.
The trials and hardship experienced by the main characters in the story are too much for a person to bear, but Frank McCourt's family managed to survive despite the series of tragedy that struck their family. When someone in the family is about to give up, another member or friend gives support and assures that everything will be fine. This shows that despite the problems in their lives, there is hope that the best is yet to come. The quote of Thomas Jefferson tells us that we cannot do anything about the past but we can work and change the future.
i think without hope people wouldn't try they would just give up so easily like if someone was in the hospital they would pray and hope he/she gets better, without survival their wouldn't be these strong people we have today who went through a lot in their past life and survival is who they are today fighting for what they believe in and for who they are.
I think that the book relates to the quote because Frank's life is kind of in a rut with his father always being unemployed and drunk and all of his siblings passing away yet he keeps his hopes up and has dreams for the future and doesn't dwell on the past so that he can move on with his life. Away from the rut and into (hopefully) something better. - SP P1
Star: I like how you have details from in the story with malachy being a drunk and unemployed. Wish: I wish you would've used specific examples from the book that relates to the quote instead of just bits and pieces and pretty much saying the same thing over again about his life being in a rut. How is it in a rut?

Interesting comments folks...There's a lesson to be learned or reinforced from this novel and/or the Thomas Jefferson quote in that yes, our pasts need to be acknowledged and dealt with but it's what you do with the future that moves us along...
This novels tells us that we should always have hope despite the difficulty or how big the obstacle is. Having hope will make you do incredible things, like how Frank Mccourt came from a poor family and became a successful author.
The novel tell us about how hope can hurt us but how it can stand us too. The characters suffer a lot as you read the book, but they still believe that they're gonna have times which will relieve the pain they have suffered.
"Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained." (Hunger Games, 2012)
This quote connects to Angela's Ashes in many ways. One example is the time that Frank's dad returned home with his full week’s salary to provide food and basic needs for the family instead of going to the pub, coming back hammered, and singing songs down the streets of Limerick.
The book tells us that even when you're going through a rough time you should have hope because if you work hard and push through your struggles you'll succeed and have a happier and better life.
The novel tells us that for many of these people, hope is the only thing they have. The poorer people in the novel dont have many good memories to reminisce about, so they can only look to the future. It tells us that hope is very important to these people because when their life gets harder, they can look to the future and hope that the bad times pass.
I think it has alot to with survival because they live in poverty and everyday is hard to get food and drinks and such. Amd when ur faced with the worest u always gotta have hope it'll get better. - Samantha Bouchard
There's survival in this novel that has come and go but theirs always hope to turn things around and teaches how we some times bad things happen for a reasons but their always good time to help turning things around Period 1 Rose Marie
The quote relates to the novel because that is the idea that the family had in their minds throughout the book that one day things will be better than right now or the way they've been so far. If they never had hope Angela would never be able to function properly and be a proper mother to her children without hope of a better life when she was depressed, also she would have more troubles getting over losing so many of her kids. -Brittany k P1
