All stories are based on conflict; if everyone is happy and no one
fights, there isn’t much to write about.
What conflicts provide the basis for this story? Do other conflicts develop as the story goes
along? Are these conflicts settled by
the end of ‘Angela’s Ashes’? How? Keep in mind the types of conflict we have discussed in class: Character vs. Character, Character vs. Self, Character vs. Society, Character vs. Nature.

Well there are so many Conflicts in this story. The first one i would think of is Character vs. Character, with Angela and her husband, with his problem with drinking and spending all his pay on drinks that night he came home drinking she started yelling at him about money and the Children. The other I really got into was the Character vs. Nature when there daughter Margaret died. No one had the control in this problem which made it the Nature part. So i would say it was The McCourt family Vs Margaret's death.

Character vs. Character
ReplyDelete(Franks father’s alcoholism problem that we discussed in class). We identified that he had a problem at the beginning of the book the fact he promised his family time and time again he wouldn't spend the families income on boozes but he did anyways, and failed to provide for his family. Even after going to war in world war 2 were many Irish families benefited and got a fix salary that was stable and really couldn't get fired he still failed to send money back. So Frank tries to resolve this conflict but it never gets settled.
In this memoir every thing seem to be just one big conflict. But the one big conflict that stands out to me is man vs. Self. This conflict is Malachy McCourt facile g his drinking problem. Now this conflict is one that he may not see is one but it surly is something that changes an entire family's life. Weather it be spending the food money on a bottle of bitter whiskey just so he can escape the life that he has for a couple hours, or coming home drunk and letting his children witness this horrible thing. Malachy McCourts battle with himself shapes a family's legacy into one of a troubled past and broken future

DeleteA major conflict in this story is the fact that their father, Malachy is always drinking away the money he's supposed to be bringing home. As the novel goes on, the character vs. character conflict continues with Angela and Malachy. Their family is in need of money but Malachy still decides to spend it on alcohol. The McCourt's have a difficult time dealing with poverty and the deaths of their children (character vs. nature) Frank tries very hard to fix the problems occurring in their families but has a hard time doing so.

There's so many conflict in this story. Character vs nature when the new born for very ill and die and then there the other two brother for sick and die. Character vs character father and mother fighting cause the father has no job and he keeps drinking all the time, and not looking for a job and try to save up their money
ReplyDeletethere are numerous conflicts in this novel. The conflict that provides the basis of this story to me is the poverty that Frank's family lives with. This is an example of character vs society. Because they live with little to no money, they struggle in society. Its also character vs character because Frank's father chooses to spend his wages on drinking. This causes extra conflict between his father and his mother. The conflicts definitely develop as the story goes along. Theres always a new conflict that the family or frank has to deal with.

I think there is a lot of conflict in this story one would be character vs character with the fact that his dad is a raging acaholic and his mom struggles to feed the family because of it. Yes there are many different conflics that frank and. His family have to over come in the end but it all end out to work out fine
ReplyDeleteA conflict in this story is when franks dad goes to the bar after every pay day and doesn't show up at home with the wages he has made to help support the family therefor the conflict happens between frank and his family because the father isn't helping them any by drinking it all away L.G
ReplyDeletePeriod 2
There are many conflicts like character vs character for instants Angela and Malachy are always arguing about malachys drinking and how he needs to bring back to weeks wages to provide for his children another conflict would be character vs nature and that would relate to the loss of little margeret no one really has control of her passing away so no one should blame each other
ReplyDeleteIn the novel Angela's ashes there are many conflicts. The one that stood out to me and probably to everyone who reads the book is Malachy McCourts drinking problem. All in all this caused many conflicts, it caused the family to starve (character vs nature) it caused Frank's parents to fight constantly (character vs character) it also put the family even further in poverty because all their money was being spent on alcohol. (Character vs society) I am not yet sure if any of these conflicts are going to be terminated or taken care of by the end of the novel because I am not yet finished however I am hopeful they do.

I think the biggest conflict you see in this story is the repetitiveness of his dad going to the bar and spending all the money and never knowing if he's going to have food. He knows his dad gets paid on Friday but he never knows if his dad will come home with food for them of come home drunk and that's devastating growing up. Human vs human conflict. K.S Peroid 2
ReplyDeleteWhen the book starts, I think there's a conflict between character vs. character as Angela and malachy have a baby. It's two families from opposite ends of Ireland who don't like each other. As the book goes along, the family proves to have conflict between character and nature as poverty hits and the children die from illnesses.
ReplyDeleteThe conflict that keeps coming to mind in this memoir is the conflict of character vs self. Malachy McCourt struggles with drinking and spending the families money on himself and allowing his family to be affected with poverty. With his drinking he can not keep a job for more then 2 or 3 weeks. As a result of his constant drinking problem his family has come to harbour anger against him which most likely made him drink more to deal with their feelings toward him.

First there was character vs character and then there was character vs circumstance the sad truth was that they never win the battle they simply survive
ReplyDeleteIn this novel there are many conflicts happening, there is Character vs Nature when Angela keeps loosing her children too illness and starvation. There is also Character vs Character when Angela has to deal with her anger towards Malachy when he keeps spending the money on pints when he can be giving the family food and potentially saving their life's. Also, Frank has conflicts with some students at school and the masters, which also displays Character vs Nature.

Oops, character vs character*
DeleteThere's alot of conflicts in this memoir like how his father is an alcoholic and spends his wages on booze (man vs character) but the most important conflict in this memoir is man vs society. They live through poverty, siblings dying because they lack money and the fact that they have to donate to the church.
ReplyDeleteConflict is always present in the story. Many would say that Malachy's drinking problem caused the other conflicts in the story like not having a job, losing his job, not providing financial support to his family, conflict with his wife and his wife's relatives (character vs. character), death of his kids and many more. I would like to consider Malachy's drinking problem and attitude in life not as the cause of conflict but the result of him having a father who grew up wild, in trouble with the English, or Irish or both. Malachy's mom told Frank that as a wee lad, Malachy was dropped on his head and since then, he was never the same again. I think a person is shaped by his environment (character vs. nature). It's easy to blame somebody and focus on his misfortunes (character vs. society) without looking at the root cause of the problem. It's true that we are responsible for our choices, but for someone who is not even sure of who he is and his purpose in life (character vs. self), it is difficult to make the right decision.
ReplyDeleteIn the story the McCourt family wer'ent the only family experiencing the depression because of the war times and how people are losing family members. The conflict kinda stops when Malachy eneters the war and Angela who was forced to work in factories to supply the men at war. For example (characters vs characters) Malachy vs Angela losing money over drinks . John Bulos p#1
ReplyDeleteAll of the conflicts are present at least once in the book. The first conflict that becomes present first is Character vs. Nature. I think this is the first conflict because Angela and Malachy never really had the intention to be together and get married but "nature" happened and Angela got pregnant and they had to get married. Character vs. Nature conflict happens other times throughout the book as well, mostly with Angela getting pregnant or the children dieing. Character vs. Character is one of the more common conflicts in the book. Angela vs. Malachy, Malachy vs. Anglea's family, Frank vs. peers, ect. Character vs. Society is also a big conflict because Angela is from the South and Malachy is from the North so society looks down on them for that. Character vs. Society conflict is also evident when Frank gets doors slammed in his face because he is poor. Character vs. Self conflict is not as present as the other conflicts but it is there. Character vs. Self conflict is shown when most of the children die Malachy blames himself and Angela blames herself for their deaths. You can kind of see that even later in the book Angela still blames herself because she is always looking at the ashes of the fire, like they are the ashes of her children.

There are many conflicts in the memoir that even cant be count. the most obvious conflict is Malachy's. drinking problem. the conflict is between character vs character, between frank's father and Angela his mother or it also could be between frank and his father. malachy drinking problem is almost the cause of every problem that the family face. he spend all the wage he get on drinking, ignoring his family needs for food, clothes, and home. Angela suffers a lot through the book because of her husbands drinking problem, she struggles in finding food, coal, and shoes for her kids.
ReplyDeleteAlso frank has to mature faster than most kids because of his father, in this young age the responsibility of his sibling was put on his shoulder. when his father is out for a drink and his mother is weeping in bed, frank would take care of his brothers. for example in chapter one frank went with his siblings to play at the playground when his father wasn't home and his mother was depressed because Malachy spent all of his wage on alcohol. that day, frank had to stole a banana from the store for his starving siblings. Malachy drinking problem was a big conflict through the memoir, most of the events that happened was becouse of that. the family life could change if he spend his wage on the family rather than spending it on alcohol. we saw how the family life changed when he became sober for his little girl.
Certainly there are many conflicts that rise throughout Angela's Ashes, but the main one that comes to my mind is the character's s conflicts with society. From an early stage we can notice such a conflict, if it wasn't because of society Malachy wouldn't be forced to marry Angela from the beginning, and they wouldn't have to suffer all the things that happened afterwards. Also we can say because of society Malachy wouldn't be looked down at when he was applying for jobs just because he was from the north, and in the same way Angela's family wouldn't harass her just because she married a man who was "odd" because he is from the north. A problem that any reader would notice in the book is malachy's constant drinking, actually I believe that society also interfere in creating such a problem, we all know even today that alcohol can't be this huge problem if it wasn't wide spread in other words what I want to say is; if it wasn't that easy to drink and it wasn't that cheap to buy a drink maybe the family wouldn't suffer that much, who knows? Maybe they would even have a better shelter, food, clothes and live in general.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most potent conflicts that Frank faces throughout the story is the topic of Character vs Society. A specific entity of society Frank battles against is the Catholic Church. Frank constantly defies the church and its wishes for him, once by choosing to work instead of attending the rituals most other boys his age are forced to attend. He also commits many sins later on in the story and although we see it affect him very deeply, he learns to get over it and begins sinning again, mostly in sexual ways. The Catholic Church wants Frank to be a very specific man but Frank does not. Another large conflict is the conflict between Malachy and his family regarding his drinking. While the conflict is largely one sided in the beginning, with the family being fairly powerless to control his drinking, it began to change when Angela began taking the money from Malachy right when he got it, and as the children got older, they began to despise their Dad for his acts. The conflict eventually ended with Malachy leaving the family forever.

ReplyDeleteThe conflicts in the story with illness or character vs nature serves as the foundation of the story, although Frank has no control in how wet Limerick gets and how the exposure makes many ill. Illness is one on the main recurring conflicts of the memoir. The illness causes the character vs character of Malachy Sr against Angela as he turns to the bottle to deal with the loss of their children from illness and in the sense turns his back on his own family.
ReplyDeleteThe family has such hardships, but it builds Franks ideals with the need to leave his family and eventually Ireland. By the end of the book some of the conflicts are still prominent but Frank rather leave them behind and move forward.
There are many different conflicts in this story but character vs character seemed to be the most common cause of the problems. The main characters that have the problems are Angela and Malachy, the reason these two are the cause for many conflicts are because Malachy keeps spending all of his money at the bar which upsets Angela. Malachy just seemed to be the cause of the conflicts no matter what they were. Sadly the conflicts never really do get resolved, Malachy sort of just never returns to the family and Frank moved away so that leaves Malachy Jr to take care of the family.
ReplyDeleteThe book "Angela's Ashes" is full of lots of conflict. One major conflict in the book is character vs society, because the people around the McCourt family are keeping them down. When the family tries to get Frank a job at the church they are always shutdown by the priests. Another major conflict in the story is character vs self, as the was Frank is raised causes him to doubt humself and what he is doing. When he "sins" this causes him a lot of greif, and even though he is able to get over it it still is very present in the story. Another conflict is character vs nature, as illness appears very often in the book. Frank contracts many health issues through his life, and they start to shape his life because they just cause one more barrier that prevents him from doing what he wants.
ReplyDeleteThank-you for everyone's thoughtful comments...
ReplyDeleteThe book Angela's Ashes is full of conflict. The two that stand out most for me are Character vs Character and Character vs society. Character vs Character because at one point Frank tries to get the dole from his father but ends up going to the pub anyways. There are many other instances but I find this one stands out most for me. An example of Character vs Society would be Malachy is trying to get a job but keeps coming home jobless.
ReplyDeleteYou can also see character vs nature when The babies end up dying because a lack of food and consistently being exposed to the elements.
