Turning points ... Weekly Blog Response - October 6 - 10th
In a short response, discuss what YOU think the most important part/character/event has been in your reading so far... Bonus marks for including a WISH and a STAR by commenting on someone else's response.
I think the most important character is Frank McCourt, the author of the book. At a young age, he witnessed and experienced tragedies and hardships in his family. As the eldest child, he was given the responsibility to look after his younger brothers and sister. He was like a second father to them. He even has to watch over his father to make sure he (father) doesn't go to the pub and get drunk. Frank was able to live and survive to write the story of his life. I admire his courage and determination
In my opinion, I think one of the most essential character is Angela, Frank's mother. I consider her as a enduring person. Even when her children start dying, in little time, she gets herself back again to support the family. She doesn't divorce her husband, who is a drunk and wastes his money in pubs drinking. But she's never the same again as her children die one by one. She begs store owners and charity for clothes and food. I really like her will to no matter how low it takes her, she would find any way to help her family and not give up.
star: I totally agree with you about Angela's character, she is a strong women and a great mother. I also liked your choice of example of how Angela didn't divorce her husband and still holding her family together. Wish. I wish that you would tell us some flows about Angela's character, because no one is perfect and Angela may have some bad desesions she made through her live that lead her to what she is going through
Strong response Abdullah! I agree with your comments as well Najma. You've backed up why you agree with Abdullah. When you mention flaws Najma...what are some of your thoughts about these? Reimon...which words and examples do you "approve of"...?
In my opinion the McCourts moving to Ireland was the most important event that has happened so far in the book. I think it is the most important because if they didn't move to Ireland a lot of the stuff that happens in the book after the move wouldn't have happened or would have happened differently for example Frank going to school would have been different because religion is as big in the USA as it is in Ireland. If they didn't move to Ireland the book would have been a lot diffeence. - Susan Prystupa P3
Star: I like your choice and examples on why you think it would be different wish: I wish you would've expanded on your thought about the school and how it would be different because I don't quite understand where you're coming from about the religion between America and Ireland and the schooling.
I was trying say that in America in the book they don't value religion as much as in Ireland. You this because they don't mention religion that much before they move and when they do move the grandma gets mad at the parents because the kids don't know anything about religion. If they didn't move to Ireland they wouldn't know as much about there religion and it wouldn't be as big of a part in the big as it currently is. - Susan Prystupa P3
Interesting "on line conversation" Jenna and Susan. Your additional explanation helped to make your initial response more clear. I agree with your point about religion having a greater impact on schooling in Ireland. It would be interesting to find out the role of Catholic education on students in 2014!
In my opinion, Margaret was the most important character in the novel. Mainly because when she was born, there was a moment of clarity and peace for the mccourts. As malachy stopped drinking and brought home his paychecks and Angela and happy with her new daughter and new husband. When Margaret passes, everything changes dramatically for the family because of that life changing moment. Maybe if she wouldn't have died, malachy would still be employed and bringing home money, Angela wouldn't be depressed and frank wouldn't feel like he'd have to take it upon himself to become head bread buyer of the family. Her life and death, to me, when ultimately the most important part of the novel.
Star: I admire how you pointed out the possibility that if Margaret wasn't dead ,maybe everything would change , including the mental and the emotional state of the family , especially by mentioning how Malachy at that time stopped drinking. I also like how you mentioned the emotional damage that happened to Frank himself after her death.
Frank is a very important character because he is the narrator, and an event that is taking place right now is he is starting realize things. He's starting to mature in a way, like going to do the things for his mother that his father wont do and thinking efficiently. Actually I believe he is the man of the family even if he is a little boy, he's doing a lot more than his dad. Like he helps his mom go shopping, goes to pick up coal for her, and he helped her drag the furniture from one end to another. He's always by his mothers side when his dad is off at the pubs or who knows what. He can be cheating, I dont know.
I believe that the death of Margaret was the most important event that has happened so far. the birth of Margaret connected the family together, everyone was happier and Malachy became sober for a while and started bringing food home. after the death of Margaret the family started falling apart even more, Angela become depressed and ignored her other children while Malachy went out of the house for few days. also little Frank started to realize what death is at a young age. Another important event in the book was caused by this event which is the family moving back to Limerick where every thing get even worse and Frank's suffering story began.
I can't even imagine as a parent how difficult it would be to lose a child. At the same time although I sympathize with Angela - I'm frustrated that she would "check out" on her family as much as she did. Frank is a very forgiving son...I would say.
I believe that the family moving to Ireland, specificity to Limerick is significantly an important turning point in the book. It’s, as I see it, the start of their new life after Margaret death and many other depressing things. In Limerick Frank began to discover the new world around him, after it was changed, he starts to go to school there where he sees children, who are even more poor than him, he also starts to realize the importance of religion there and how it plays a huge role in people’s life, where it can provide either comfort or even pressure! It is Ireland, where McCourt will build his new perspective about life, poverty and world in general; it is indeed the place where many adventures will begin.
I think the most important part of the book so far was when Frank McCourt had to overcome his illness of tyfoidfeber.
For the first time in his life, his dad gave him some kind of affection when he gave him a kiss on the cheek. This was a strange thing as his father never gave him affection before so it made him think that he could be dying.
The thought of losing another child, after losing three already, reinforced his mother’s instinct to keep her son in the hospital even after the first doctor said it was just a bad cold, and could sleep it off. Knowing the doctor smelt of whisky, she decided it was better to wait things out a few days until Dr. Troy returned and evaluated it was tyfoidfeber.
The character that I feel plays a major role in the novel was Angela. Angela was a successful dancer and she had a bright future but all of that was pushed aside because she met Franklin. From there they started a family and unfortunately their baby girl, Margaret died shortly. Angela went through a mental breakdown that caused her to neglect her other kid which created curiosity in their neighborhood. As they moved to Ireland she lost Eugene, one of the twins and not long after his other twin, Oliver also passed. Angela is a mother and losing not one but three children in a short amount of time will definitely take its toll on her emotionally and mentally. Yet she wakes up every morning and scavenges to find materials to start fire for warmth, scraps to be cooked into a decent meal, and take care of the debts they have from shop owners. She is also stuck with an alcoholic husband that drinks all his salary away before they could use it for necessities. These are some of the examples of why I find Angela as an important part of the story. M.T period 3
I was think that the most important character is Frank‘s father Malachy. Frank wrote in book was his childhood stories between his family and experiences. At first he wrote of his father like a “trouble maker”,at the first two weeks Malachy brings the wage home, everyone was have a really happy time and after he is going to spend all his wages and the dole for drinking. In the book we can see he was charged with whole family's life. That time this became a big life pressure for him, but he still love his family and never abandon them. And also i wish can see his father can become more better.
Star. I like Frank describe his father's way, make me feels very authentic. He such have a great mother for holding that much kids with a sensible husband. P2
Tiana...I agree...I wish Frank's father could become a better parent. I wonder how people can turn their lives around when there are so many other factors at play (alcoholism, poverty, social class and boundaries)...
I think the most important part of the book so far is when margaret died because that's where the family starts to crumble, her mom was depressed, his dad was unemployed and it caused the family to move back to Ireland where another tragic moment will happen.
the turning point of this book is when Margaret dies and Malachy the father and the whole family, try's to start a new life and Ireland and get a job to feed the children.
I think the most important character in the book is Frank. Frank experienced many tragic and difficult situations as a young boy. He did not grow up like a normal young boy would've. He had to be the man of the family starting at a young age because his father could not fulfill the job. Frank took care of his siblings and his mother because his father was always drunk. Frank took things into his own hands and helped his mother by getting coal, helping move furniture and taking care of his siblings. I think Frank is the most important character because he is always helping everyone else, even when he's down.
So far in my reading one of one of the obvious turning points is the family moving to Ireland. Although they had a meager life in New York, they were settled but when reallocated to Ireland this made them strangers everywhere they went. Barely any money and no boarding they hopped around being ridiculed as 'yankees'. I think this shows how rough McCourts struggled finding a house to live in and pride aside had to ask for help.
I have reached the last 10 pages of the book and so far, I think that the most important character here is Frank. Despite of all their family's harships and problems, he still managed to take care of his mother and siblings eventhough their father left them and never came back. He stood up as the man in the house, worked real hard to give a shilling to his mother and as he grew up, he managed to save up for his dream. His dream to go to America. That's why at the age of 19, he made his dream come true and I beleive that that is the most important event that happened in the story,
I think that Margret played a big roll in this story even though it was short lived. When she was born everything for the family changed, Malachy (father) had stopped drinking and started working, providing food for his family. Also after her being born everyone became joyful and didn't care much as to what was going on around them like poverty, they were so happy with the little beautiful girl they now had in their life. After she died part of each person in the family was lost. But more then anything more was lost in Angela and Malachy, Angela caved in on herself, wouldn't eat or nothing didn't have much for a care inte world now that her baby girl was gone, having Frankie to take care of himself and his brothers. As for Malachy he went back to his old ways drinking away the money and coming home singing Kevin Barry. Due to what happens in the family in the short period of time, that is why I think Margaret played a big roll in this story. -Period 1 : JC
I think the most important character in the book is Angela. Angela is a loving mother who retains her sense of humor. Angela sacrifices her dignity and class in order to provide for her children. She never has any expectations for her children, she raises them to be well behaved, hardworking men, and kind. Angela would give anything for her family to survive, beg for food and clothes from stores. She is a hard working mother and strives for her families survival. J.V. Period 2
I think that frank is the most important character because its his story and his life and he's starting to realize that he has to be the man of the house because his dad is doing who knows what and wont do anything around the house so frank has to mature a lot faster than a regular kid. But at the same time if his dad wasnt a neglecting father then franks story/life would be very different -d.h p1
i believe that frank is the most important character in the book because the story starts with his dad addicted to drinking and never brings home the wages from his job to put food on the table for frank and to try helping the family get out of a hard life . period 2 L.G
I think that Frank is the most important character in the novel because the story starts with his Dad drinking a lot and not bringing home money at the end of the week. He also doesn't put any food on the table and that is a terrible time in Frank's life. Eric L. Period 2
I think the most important character is Frank because he's the main character and the story revolves around him. The most important event that I have read up to so far is Frank's dad not coming home with the money so his family can't eat and being drunk instead and causing fights.
In my professional opinion Frank McCourt is undoubtedly the most important character in the memoir. From a very young age he experienced hardship and loss that would shape him to be the man he is today. He had to learn to survive in a cruel and unjust world practically by him self and as a young boy had to try and emerge to be like everyone else - Lucas preciado
If you've read others' comments - you will see that there are lots of differing opinions out there about the "turning point" of choice. Your support for your choice is evident...In the next blog - be sure to read others and comment with a wish and start (with details).
I think Angle is the most important character because the book title has her name but also her son wrote her strong and her weak moments. She went through losing her children by death. Her husbands drinking problems, and having to beg for stuff to keep her family alive. She did so much trying to keep them all alive but there was always something she was battling. -Saundra Voss Period 1
I think that angle is the most important character but I also think that frank is to because frank has suffered and been in as much pain as his mom. Losing his brother n sister at such a young age shows that in the novel it put a big impact on both of them. Angel did have more pain because she didn't just lose one baby she lost three and that will put a big affect and pain on any mom. She is a strong women putting up with her drunk of a husband and going throw the three deaths of her children. -N.C period 1
The most important part in Angela's ashes so far is the death of Margaret in the first chapter. When Margaret was born, things began to look more hopeful for the McCourt family. Malachy was holding down a job and actually brought home all of the money because he quit drinking and Angela seemed much happier as a result. Sadly, Margaret died later in the book and after that, things began to look much worse than before. Malachy began drinking again which sucked up all of the families money and Angela basically stopped being a parent to her remaining children. When the Macnamera sisters saw the kids being neglected and the family in such disarray, they arranged with Angela's mother to move the family to Ireland, where their lives were shown to become drastically worse. It seems the death of Margaret started the chain of events that would lead to the sad situation the family is in now. Margaret acted as a catalyst for the family to fall apart and eventually be forcibly moved to Ireland, which is where a large portion of the book takes place.
I believe the most important part in the novel Angela's Ashes is when Margaret dies in chapter one. I believe this is the most important because after this event, we see Frank McCourt and his family head to Ireland and seem to walk around aimlessly with no money. I think if Margaret wasn't to die they would have stayed in America and would maybe be better off than in Ireland. This book is amazing because it just shows how much of an effect the death of a family member can have on a group of people. -Evan Waruk -P2
In my thought , when Angela had a baby name Margaret, when she was born malachy stop drinking for while and made sure the baby was safe and well but things turn around when she got sick and died. Angela couldn't take care of her own kids and things are going back in to the old ways how it was been like all the drinking and loudness. Angela had the strength to keep carry on and help her family and be happy while theirs some hard rough times period 1 Rose Marie
I would have to say that Franks Father Malachy has to be one of the most important characters to me. Malachy is the reason that the family is poor and lived in poverty for so long, he would get his pay check and go straight to the bar and drink the familys money away. If Malachy was a good, responsible parent then he would have brought home his whole pay check to buy food for his family or a better home. Because Malachy would spend all his money at the bar and get so drunk he would sleep through work the next day and because of the amount of times he got fired not many people would actually want to hire him. So to me Malachy is one of the most important characters because the book would be totally different if he just acted like an adult. period 2, K.T
I think the most important character in "Angela's ashes" has to be Angela herself. Sure Frank is important, but Angela endures the pain of losing her children, added to the fact of a neglectful husband, who wastes all of their money on pints at the bar. The pain she goes through would be unbearable, but she pushes through it to keep her family safe and fed. Neither Frank, nor Malachy made it very easy for Angela, but did that stop her from finding numerous ways to feed her kids, or keep them clothed, no not at all. Period 2 Austin P
Logan Nadeau - I think you know which period- English! GRADE 12 I think one of the biggest turning points in the novel is when Frank's mother moves in with his abusive uncle. This soon causes Frank to run away, and live with his other uncle. He soon becomes a message boy, and finds love with a local girl who is dying. But when, his love dies, Frank is thrown into dread, all the while his mother moves back in with him. Franks love dying is another turning point in the novel. Because what happens next, causes a wind of change in Frank's life. When Frank is depressed, he decides to go down to the local bar, and has his first pint of beer. This throws him into a spiral, in which Frank goes back home to confront his mother. To finally throw out his anger, and all the things he wanted to say for a long time. But it seems as though Frank's mother, Angela, already knows the things she has done. But she wont stand by, taking her sons angry words, and hatred. So this causes a fight between them, ending when Frank strikes his own mother. After this, it is seen that Frank was overcome with remorse, guilt, and pain over this. Frank McCourt runs to the church with his grief and sorrow from the night before. But it is also seen that Frank is met by a priest, and is taught to love himself, and that God will love him back. And From this, Frank McCourt learns to love himself, and make his own choices in life to help himself. I do also agree with many other responses that Frank's mother, Angela was only trying to do her best, and be the mother she was. His mother, and their mother (Frank's siblings). And i can learn from this, that parents really are only trying to do their best, even when it seems as if they don't know, or don't care. You cant take your parents for granted, and sometimes we tend to forget that they only want whats best for you, or that they love you, no matter what. And though many make the point of Margret's death being one of the biggest turning points in the memoir, it is what starts off the story. But I believe that Franks coming to learn himself in a way that he loves himself is one of the largest turning points. In which his mother moving in with the abusive uncle was something that caused this to happen. Along with Frank's girlfriend passing. I really think it is shown somehow, that Frank, and his mom, Angela took a lot of pain through their lives. And the fact that Frank was Angela's oldest son, Frank knew how his parents were very out of touch, with his father being a drunkard, while his mother stays strong through it all. They didn't just take on moments of death in the family, but also criticism. Not just from the Catholic church but even Angela's cousins/ sisters. Many do say on this blog that Frank, and his siblings cause Angela a deal of trouble, and stress. But, they also fill Angela with a sense, a feeling of hope, and happiness through her darkest hours and days. And through that, Angela keeps pushing through, and living. I wish a star to the people who said that the biggest turning points were at the beggining of the novel, where a lot of things like conflict, and issues were started out, and were slowly dealt with, and some maybe not as much. But i want to wish a wish to people who said that Angela was taking in all the pain, because I really do think that all of them felt pain, and anguish. But as a family, they pushed through, and moved on to live. Although, i would like to say that, without them moving to Ireland in the first place, with Frank's sister Margaret passing away. Frank most likely would never had had a story to write. His life story. Angela's Ashes.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important character in the book is Angela. J.V. Period 2
ReplyDeleteI think that frank is the most important character because its his story and his life and he's starting to realize that he has to be the man of the house because his dad is doing who knows what and wont do anything around the house so frank has to mature a lot faster than a regular kid. But at the same time if his dad wasnt a neglecting father then franks story/life would be very different

I think the most important character is franks dad cause he's the main reason for all the problem that happen in franks life
ReplyDeletei believe that frank is the most important character in the book because the story starts with his dad addicted to drinking and never brings home the wages from his job to put food on the table for frank and to try helping the family get out of a hard life . period 2

I think that Frank is the most important character in the novel because the story starts with his Dad drinking a lot and not bringing home money at the end of the week. He also doesn't put any food on the table and that is a terrible time in Frank's life. Eric L. Period 2
ReplyDeleteI think that frank is one of the most important because he survived through everything ,death, depression, poverty Duncan farrow period 2
ReplyDeleteI think the most important character is Frank because he's the main character and the story revolves around him.

He had to learn to survive in a cruel and unjust world practically by him self and as a young boy had to try and emerge to be like everyone else

If you've read others' comments - you will see that there are lots of differing opinions out there about the "turning point" of choice. Your support for your choice is evident...In the next blog - be sure to read others and comment with a wish and start (with details).
ReplyDeleteI think Angle is the most important character because the book title has her name but also her son wrote her strong and her weak moments. She went through losing her children by death. Her husbands drinking problems, and having to beg for stuff to keep her family alive. She did so much trying to keep them all alive but there was always something she was battling.

ReplyDeleteI believe the most important part in the novel Angela's Ashes is when Margaret dies in chapter one.

ReplyDeleteI would have to say that Franks Father Malachy has to be one of the most important characters to me.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important character in "Angela's ashes" has to be Angela herself.

ReplyDeleteI think one of the biggest turning points in the novel is when Frank's mother moves in with his abusive uncle.
