Becoming a Web Celeb

Grade 9's - Read the article that is handed out in class, "Meet Conan O'Brien's Twitter Friend, Sarah Killen:  'My Life Has Already Changed!'". 

Put yourself in Sarah's shoes and imagine how sudden fame could change a teen's life - in both positive and negative ways.  What would you do if you were in Sarah's shoes?  Post to the class blog or reflect in a journal response.  

Identity and Image...

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines an image as:

'A representation of the external form of an object…the character or reputation of a person or thing as generally perceived'. Identity is defined as: 'The quality or condition of being a specified person or thing'.

Our individual identity is unique. It combines our genetic being, our cultural, religious and linguistic background, our interests and abilities. It is affected by where and how we live, the country of origin of our parents and grandparents, and what we do with our lives.

Young people develop their self-image through seeing how others relate to them and through visual clues. These might range from photos (usually taken by other people) to reflections in a mirror. All this combines with how they feel about themselves and how they interact with the world.

What does this image tell us about this person's identity?  What are your thoughts about this person's self-image?  Explain your thinking in 5+ sentences on our blog.

          All stories are based on conflict; if everyone is happy and no one fights, there isn’t much to write about.  What conflicts provide the basis for this story?  Do other conflicts develop as the story goes along?  Are these conflicts settled by the end of ‘Angela’s Ashes’?  How?  Keep in mind the types of conflict we have discussed in class:  Character vs. Character, Character vs. Self, Character vs. Society, Character vs. Nature.
